Rays sign Wade Davis before he's arbitration eligible

By Anthony Caruso III

The Tampa Bay Rays has decided to keep around one of its young pitchers.

The Rays has reached an agreement with Wade Davis on a long-term contract. The contract is reportedly going to be for 7-years. The first four years of this new contract are guaranteed at a total of $12.6 million.

The contract has a value of $35.1 million if Davis gets to the 7th year. It is a risky move by the Rays to pay a pre-arbitration player so much money during the early part of his career. Most teams usually wait until the players perform for them and see what they can give the team.

The contract would be a waste if he only turns out to be a No. 3 or lower pitcher in the rotation. If his potential becomes true, he would be the Rays No. 2 pitcher for many years to come, behind David Price, and the contract would not be argued.

By Anthony Caruso III

Dye, a 37-year-old, has decided to retire after he could not receive a Major League contract. This was first reported by Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.

Dye was in contact with several teams this off-season, but he wanted a guaranteed roster sport. Unfortunately, nobody was willing to give him more than a minor league contract, with an invite to the spring training camp.

Dye did not play in the 2010 season. His last season was in 2009 with the Chicago White Sox. He ends his career with 325 career home runs.

Pennington might have to retire after getting hurt playing in a pick up basketball game

By Anthony Caruso III

A basketball game has changed Chad Pennington's future.

The free agent quarterback wanted to re-sign with the Miami Dolphins, but now that may not happen. He might not sign with another team, and as a result, will have to sit out the 2011 season.

Pennington, even if he does sign with a team, will have to miss significant time. He will require surgery on his torn ACL that he suffered in a basketball game. Pennington was almost back to full health from his fourth shoulder surgery when this ACL tear happened.

He might have to retire after this latest development.

Dodgers re-sign young star Billingsley for the next several years

By Anthony Caruso III

The Los Angeles Dodgers have re-signed one of their top young stud players.

The Dodgers have agreed to a contract with Chad Billingsley. He signed a three-year contract, with a fourth-year option that could be bought out by the Dodgers, making him a free agent again. This contract extension is expected to be worth $35-36 million.

The contract covers the 2012-to-2014 season. It also included an option for 2015. The salary for the option year is still being negotiated at this present time.

This is a good deal for both the Dodgers and Billingsley, as the Dodgers get to keep one of their young players for many years to come. Billingsley is just 26-years-old and has a 3.55 ERA in his first five seasons in the majors and in the past three years, has made 31 or more starts per season.

There are conflicting reports on Kevin Love, but he's not speaking

By Anthony Caruso III

The Minnesota Timberwolves has announced a return for Kevin Love.

Love is expected to return on Sunday for the Wolves. Love has been batting a groin injury, which has caused him to miss the past few games.

He will be returning just in time to face the Boston Celtics, if he does return on Sunday. But the key to this story is that Love has not said a word about his return. There are even reports that Love is finished for the rest of the season from the Associated Press.

The team has not intention of shutting Love down for the rest of the season. If he isn’t able to play in Sunday’s game, he should be able to return to Wednesday’s game against the Chicago Bulls.

Wilson may have to start the season on the DL with his oblique injury

By Anthony Caruso III

The San Francisco Giants do not know if they will open the season with its closer.

The Giants general manager Brian Sabean said that there’s a 50-50 chance that Brian Wilson opens the season on the 15-day disabled list. Wilson has been hampered by an oblique injury.

He suffered a mild oblique strain last weekend. He did not have a good throwing session on Wednesday. This is why Sabean came out with his thoughts on the situation.

Wilson will be back to full strength by mid-April. Sergio Romo is expected to receive the save chances until Wilson comes back.

Yankees have found Pettitte's replacement

By Anthony Caruso III

The New York Yankees are close to signing a veteran pitcher.

The Yankees and free agent pitcher Kevin Millwood are close to a minor league deal. Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated was first to report the updated news, but the two sides have been in talks since January. At that time, the Yankees would not sign Millwood until they got an answer from Andy Pettitte.

Pettitte decided to retire instead of playing in 2011. Millwood will be receiving an incentive laden contract, which is expected to have $3 million in performance-based bonuses. That’s if he can make it to the majors and receives certain inning marks.

The Yankees are expected to ask Millwood to open the season at the Triple-A level with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees and work his way up. He had a 5.10 ERA in 31 starts with the Baltimore Orioles last year.

Hornets await word on how long West will be out

By Anthony Caruso III

The New Orleans Hornets got good news back on David West.

West injured his knee on Thursday night, which looked like a potentially severe knee injury. He was taken off the court in a wheelchair. Early reports alleged that West blew out his knee.

West has had X-rays taken on his knee. The X-rays have come back negative. An MRI is scheduled for the morning to make an official announcement on how long he will be out.

The reports after the X-rays say that he has left knee trauma. That’s better than having an MCL or ACL tear.

Bengals still believe that Palmer will be back with the team for the 2011 season

By Anthony Caruso III

Carson Palmer might have to retire after all if he sticks to his guns.

Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown has reiterated that Palmer is not available for a trade. Palmer has requested a trade away from the Bengals several weeks ago. Palmer even said he would retire if he's not traded.

"I want him back," said Brown. "I haven't talked to any other team about him. I have no plans to trade him."

Brown also said that he does not see an equal value on the trade market for Palmer. The Bengals need to approach the draft as if they will be without Palmer as their starting quarterback for the 2011 season.

Sessions is dealing with a sports hernia

By Anthony Caruso III

Ramon Sessions is dealing with a serious injury.

Sessions has revealed that he is dealing with a sports hernia. Maybe this is why he's struggled to beat out Baron Davis for the Cleveland Cavaliers starting point guard job since Davis arrived in Cleveland.

"To be in this league is a dream come true, so I just try and play through it the best that I can," said Sessions. "But heat and ice are my best friends most nights."

Sessions has had a 20-point game on March 17th, then a 14-point effort on March 18th. And had 9 points tonight as the starting point guard, with Davis missing the game with reported back spams.

Spurs are likely without Duncan for the next two weeks

By Anthony Caruso III

The San Antonio Spurs are going to fill a blow for the next two weeks.

The Spurs are going to be without their power forward Tim Duncan for the next two weeks. X-rays were taken on Duncan's sprained ankle, which came back negative.

Spurs broadcaster Sean Elliott was the first report that Duncan is out two weeks. Elliott reportedly got this information from the Spurs medical staff.

Expert says Gabbert has a better Pro Day than Cam Newton

By Anthony Caruso III

Blaine Gabbert may have locked in the fact that he's going to be the No. 1 quarterback selected in next month's draft.

Gabbert had his Pro Day on Thursday on the University of Missouri campus. NFL.com contributor Gil Brandt has said that Gabbert's Pro Day workout was "outstanding and much better" than Cam Newton's.

Previously, Brandt was one of Newton's leading supporters since Newton declared for the NFL draft. Brandt even said that the Carolina Panthers should draft Newton with the No. 1 overall pick.

"I'm not so sure now," says Brandt. "Gabbert couldn't have done better had he borrowed Drew Brees' right arm. All the questions about his accuracy should start to go away after his workout in front of approximately 125 scouts, coaches and GMs."

Sizemore to play in his first game on Sunday since May 2010

By Anthony Caruso III

Grady Sizemore is finally coming back to the baseball field.

Sizemore is scheduled to be the Cleveland Indians Designated Hitter for two at-bats on Sunday. It will be his Cactus League debut. It will also be the first time that Sizemore has took live batting practice in a game since he hurt his knee last May.

He has been able to run the bases, without any discomfort, and has taken batting practice for several weeks now. So, it is expected that he will not have any problems on Sunday when he plays for the first time.

Sizemore's real test will come towards the end of March when he will be seeing regular playing time in center field. That's when he will have to run on his knee quite a bit.

By Anthony Caruso III

Cook says he did not pull out on a neighbor during an argument. But he says that the argument led to his arrest.

Illston granted media requests to detailed questionaires prior to the Bonds trial

By Anthony Caruso III

Barry Bonds is fighting a new uphil battle.

A federal judge has granted the media access to detailed questionaires that prospective jurors fill out before testimony begins in the upcoming perjury trial. Susan Illston, a U.S. District Court Judge, granted the media requests, which assists the judge and lawyers in seating a jury.

The jury will not be named until the end of the trial, according to Illston. She is concerned with the media and public trying to reach out to the jury if their names were released. A miscommunication could lead to a mistrial.

The trail is expected to start on March 21st. It is expected to last at least two weeks. Bonds is accused of lying to a grand jury in 2003 when he "unknowingly" took steroids.

USC head coach Kevin O'Neill has been suspended by the school

By Anthony Caruso III

Southern California has suspended men's basketball coach Kevin O'Neill for the rest of the Pac-10 Tournament, following his reported verbal altercation with an Arizona booster Thursday night.

Southern California athletic director Pat Haden announced the suspension in a statement Friday, saying he talked to O'Neill and "expressed my disappointment in his involvement in an incident last night in which he and his wife engaged in an argument with a supporter of another school." Haden said the school imposed additional, but unspecified, discipline. Assistant coach Bob Cantu will take O'Neill's place when the Trojans play Arizona in the semifinals on Friday.

According to the Los Angeles Times, O'Neill and the booster argued in the lobby of a Los Angeles hotel on Thursday night. The paper reported that O'Neill's wife argued with a security guard before the two were asked to leave.

"I want to apologize to my team, our university and our fans for my involvement last night in an incident with a fan," O'Neill said in a statement. "I understand my behavior as the leader of our team was unacceptable. I used poor judgment and put myself, my team and USC in a bad light. I regret that I have let them down."

Stoudemire will not be suspended one game due to his 16th tech . . at least for now

By Anthony Caruso III

New York Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire will not face a one-game suspension after the NBA rescinded a technical foul he received during Thursday's loss in Dallas.

Stoudemire was whistled for his 16th technical of the season after coming together with the Mavericks' Brendan Haywood in the second quarter. Both players were smiling and even the referee agreed it wasn't serious, Stoudemire said after the game.

Sixteen technicals mean an automatic suspension under league rules unless the NBA, as it did with Stoudemire, erases the foul. Orlando's Dwight Howard has already been suspended this season under the rule.
