Wallace runs into Fielder, then leaves the game

Brett Wallace felt what it's like to run into a brick wall.

Wallace collided with Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder, as Wallace was running to first base. He left the game with a right hip contusion after the 7th inning.

Wallace was 2-for-2 with his first stolen base of the season, before exiting. Carlos Lee was relocated to first base, while Brian Bogusevic went on to finish the game at left field.

Wallace is considered to be day-to-day, but is likely out Saturday.

Dice-K leaves the Red Sox game with elbow tightness

Daisuke Matsuzaka has run into another problem.

Matsuzaka has left his latest start arm. He was diagnosed with right elbow tightness.

He left in the top of the 5th inning. He allowed three runs on three hits and four walks, before leaving the game.

It is not known right not how serious this latest injury is. Tim Wakefield and Alfredo Aceves are expected to replace him in the rotation.

Packers get more explosive on offense with the selection of Green

The Green Bay Packers have added to their riches.

The Packers selected Hawai'i running back Alex Green with the 96th overall pick in the draft. Green will battle with James Starks and former starter Ryan Grant next season unless Starks or Grant gets traded.

"Alex Green is going to an impact player this year for the Packers," predicts NFL Network's Mike Mayock.

Green had an 8.2 YPC average but that was inflated by the Warriors spread offense. He is an explosive downhill runner that has impressive size.

Mallett lands with the Pats to back up Brady

Ryan Mallett finds the best mentor.

Mallett gets to learn from Tom Brady. Brady is a numerous Super Bowl winning quarterback, and now will have Mallett as his back up after the Patriots took a flier on Mallett with the 74th overall pick in the third round.

Mallett was the top quarterback on the Patriots draft board. Others had Mallett as a third-round through a fifth round draft pick.

Mallett is very similar to former Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe, before the Patriots got rid of him. The Patriots could use Mallett as the successor for Brady, or an eventual trade chip.

Steel bring back Brown to help the defense

The Trenton Steel has added to its defensive with their latest signing.

The Steel has signed Melik Brown to a contract for the rest of this season. Brown was in training camp with the Steel, before going to an open tryout with the Philadelphia Soul in the Arena Football League. Brown made the Soul roster out of camp, before playing in one game and getting released.

Brown was a member of the AIFA championship Baltimore Mariners team last season. He is also re-united with E.J. Nemeth, the quarterback from that Mariners team.

Brown was listed as a linebacker and a fullback for the Soul. But he will be used on the defensive line and at linebacker for the Steel.

"Our defense has been coming in as we turned things around," said Steel head coach Rose Miller. "Melik is an outstanding addition who will make our defense even stronger.

"His strength and agility will really help us."

Dolphins are mourning the loss of Mandich, a member of the two Super Bowl teams

The Miami Dolphins has lost one of its former players of yesteryear.

The Dolphins announced the passing of Jim Mandich. He was apart of the Dolphins family for more than 40-years.

Mandich was a tight end with the great Super Bowl teams in the 70's for the Dolphins. He was a member of the team from 1970 to 1977. He was a member of the 1972 and the 1973 Super Bowl teams, including the perfect season in 1972.

He had 23 touchdowns in his Dolphins career. He also had a 121 receptions for 1,406 yards, with many of these records still alive today. He is second in scoring, fifth in receptions, and second in touchdown catches.

“There will never be another Jim Mandich,” said Miami Dolphin Chairman/Managing General Partner Stephen Ross. “He was universally beloved by all members of the Dolphins family during his self-described forty year 'love affair' with the organization. His passion for this team and this community will forever live on among the generations of Dolphins fans who watched and listened to him. As a fellow Michigan Man, I cherish the time we spent talking about our shared passions for the Wolverines and Dolphins. Our collective hearts go out to the Mandich family as the entire Dolphins community mourns the passing of this one-of-a-kind legend.”

"I was sad to hear about Jim’s passing," said Hall of Fame Head Coach Don Shula who coached Mandich from 1970-1977. "I know he fought a courageous battle, but that was typical of his fighting spirit. When I think about Jim, I always looked at him as a guy who was bright, well prepared, and competitive. He was someone who I could count on as a player and was instrumental in the success we had during his time with the Dolphins. Mary Anne and I want to pass along our condolences to his wife, Bonnie, and the rest of his family."

Lembo makes his first big announcement with naming the captains

First-year Ball State head coach Pete Lembo has announced his first captains of the 2011 Ball State football team.

Sean Baker, Kgreg Hunter, Adam Morris, Briggs Orsbon, and Andrew Puthoff were selected as the team captains. The captains were selected by votes by the coaching staff and players.

"We are confident these five student-athletes will lead and represent our football program well both on and off the field," Lembo says. "They have been assets during the coaching transition and have earned the respect of their teammates. These guys all have outgoing personalities that will enable them to connect with the wide spectrum of players in the program. I look forward to working with them in the weeks and months to come as we continue preparations for the 2011 season."

Baker is the lone captain from 2010. He was an All-Mid-American Conference Second-Team selection and won the team's John Magnabosco Award, which is the MVP award for the team.

Ian Kennedy was the Cliff Lee-type pitcher in the D'Backs win over the Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies were rolling on their West Coast trip.

Then, they ran into Ian Kennedy. Kennedy was the underdog in the match up against Cliff Lee. But Kennedy stopped the Phillies 5-game win streak.

Kennedy struck out 10 batters in a three-hit shutout, helping the Diamondbacks to a 4-0 win over the Phillies. The complete game and the shutout were the first in Kennedy's career. He has made 49 previous starts in 5 Major League seasons.

He is now 3-1 on the season with a 4.02 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. He has struck out 26 batters, while walking 8 batters.

Yankees scheduled an MRI for Phil Hughes

The New York Yankees have a problem with one of their young pitchers.

Phil Hughes is scheduled to have an MRI today. It was reported that he suffered through a "dead arm" at a bullpen session on Monday.

Reportedly, there have been no physical problems found at this time, besides the "dead arm." Yankees manager Joe Girardi says the Yankees are just doing this to "see what's going on."

Concern over Hughes has intensified since he had the set back in the bullpen session.

Grizzlies are close to knocking out the Spurs from the playoffs

The Memphis Grizzlies are one just closer to winning their first NBA series.

The Grizzlies has jumped out to a 3-1 series lead over the San Antonio Spurs. The 8th-seeded Grizzlies are just one game away from taking out the top-seeded Spurs.

The Grizzlies have made a franchise history of first in this series with the Spurs. They won the first game in the series, their first-ever playoff win. Then, in Game 3, they won again, which was their first playoff win at home.

Now, the Grizzlies will travel to San Antonio in an attempt to become the second 8th-seeded team to knock off the top-seeded team since the NBA expanded to a best-of-seven series, when the 2007 Golden State Warriors defeated the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks.

“I know a lot of people didn’t expect us to be here,” Grizzlies guard Mike Conley said. “It’s not like we were expected to be up 3-1 at this point. In our locker room, we’re just playing it game by game. We want to come into San Antonio looking to end it there. We’re focused and want to be able to move onto the next round.”

Zimmerman is eligible to return, but is likely headed for a rehab assignment next

The Washington Nationals are several days away from getting their franchise back.

Ryan Zimmerman has been cleared to resume baseball activities. He has been affected by an abdominal strain.

He was checked out by team doctors on Monday and apparently is done fine. He is eligible to come off the disabled list today, but the team is likely going to hold him out for another 10 days.

Prior to Zimmerman returning, the Nats will send down Zimmerman on a minor-league rehab assignment in order for him to get some at-bats. Once he feels ready to go, he will re-join the major league roster.

Chapman is throwning with his velocity again

Aroldis Chapman has thrown the fastest pitch in the Majors last season in quite some time.

Chapman is starting to find his velocity again. He started the season at the Triple-A level. Last season, he reached a 108 mph on the gun several times out of the bullpen.

He pitched a perfect inning in the Reds loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates Monday night. Chapman struck out one and walked none Chapman averaged just over a 100 mph on his fastball, with a 102.4 mph on his fastest pitch.

Chapman is expected to get more chances in the future. And the Reds are hoping to let out a huge sigh of relief when he’s back in the bullpen.

Belt likely going back to the minors today when Ross is added back to the Giants

Brandon Belt is going to replaced by the World Series MVP.

Belt will be sent down to Triple-A today in order to make room for Cody Ross. Ross is expected to be activated from the disabled list.

Belt has an impressive 8 strikeouts-12 walk ratio over his first 61 Major League plate appearances. But he’s battling below the Mendoza line of .200 with one home run and four RBI’s.

The only other option the Giants could make is to keep Belt up at the Major League level and design Aubrey Huff for assignment.

Leake arrested for theft of T-shirts

Mike Leake has some serious problems going on right now.

Leake was arrested yesterday in Hamilton County, Ohio. He was arrested on theft charges.

Leake was stopped by Macy's employees in downtown Cincinnati after leaving the story. He allegedly stole $60 dollars worth of t-shirts.

He was taken to jail and is facing misdemeanor theft charges. Leake is making $425,000 this season.

It is a mystery when O'Neal will return to the Celtics lineup

The Boston Celtics could be without Shaquille O’Neal for the first round series.

O’Neal was first expected to come back for Game 1, but that did not happen. Now, it is a real mystery as to when/if he’ll return this season.

O’Neal has not practiced and is not able to run on his right leg. He’s been bothered by calf and Achilles issues. He suffered the calf injury on April 3rd and was wheel chaired out of the area that night.

The team is now expected O’Neal to return at the end of the Knicks series.

A.J. Price to fill in for Collison for the next couple of games

The Indiana Pacers could be without Darren Collison for their next game.

Collison was injured against the Chicago Bulls. He appears to have a badly sprained left ankle. He injured his foot by stepping on a camera men’s foot late in the first half.

Collison went down immediately and limped to the locker room. He could miss several games with this injury if it is as bad as the Pacers think it is.

A.J. Price is expected to play in Collison’s spot for the time being.

Romero likely going on the Disabled List

J.C. Romero is likely headed to the 15-day disabled list.

The Philadelphia Phillies left-handed specialist will know more later today. He strained his right calf in the ninth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at Citizens Bank Park.

After injuring his self, Romero had trouble walking to the Phillies dug out. Romero recorded the first two hours, before injuring his calf when he was pitching to Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez.

“I was trying to push off the leg and it kind of gave out on me,” Romero said. “I knew something was wrong.”

Gutierrez to start a rehab assignment for the Mariners today

Franklin Gutierrez is going back to the minors.

Gutierrez will be starting a rehab assignment with the Seattle Mariners Class-A farm team tonight. The Mariners announced the plans for Gutierrez on Thursday.

Gutierrez was placed on the 15-day disabled list on March 30th with stomach gastritis. He appeared in a game on March 19th in spring training. He only appeared in 9 spring training games and went 6-for-25 with three RBI’s in the spring.

Gutierrez is a five-year veteran, and let the Mariners with 64 RBI’s last season. He also set a major league record with 415 chances in the outfield without an error.

Riley signs a contract extension to be the Warriors GM

It has been several years since the Golden State Warriors, but Larry Riley is keeping his job.

Riley received a new multi-year contract to stay in his current position as the Warriors General Manager. Shortly before receiving the contract extension, new Warriors owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber gave Riley a vote of confidence.

Riley came to the Warriors as an assistant coach under former head coach Don Nelson. After two seasons as an assistant coach, he was promoted to assistant GM in November 2008. He just finished his second season as the GM of the Warriors.

"I think Larry has done a great job and I've been very pleased with his performance," Lacob said. "He's had a vision since he took the job less than two years ago and he has certainly helped move this team in an extremely positive direction in terms of our culture, cap management and roster additions. With that said, he also understands that we still have plenty of work to do and that expectations for this team have increased."

Blue Jays seek nearly $500K from the Canadian Government

The Toronto Blue Jays are still trying to recoup the money they lost when the G-20 Summit caused the Blue Jays-Philadelphia Phillies series moved last summer.

The Blue Jays have requested a claim of nearly $500,000 from the Canadian Government. The G-20 Summit caused the Blue Jays-Phillies series to be moved from Toronto to Philadelphia.

The Blue Jays official claim is for $470,854. The high-profile, high-security meetings caused Toronto to lose money from the baseball series and have to deal with daily protests in the streets.

The series could have been the return of Phillies ace pitcher Roy Halladay. The Blue Jays traded Halladay to the Phillies in December 2009.

Kuester is safe for now as the Pistons head coach

John Kuester is expected to return to the Detroit Pistons sidelines at this present time.

Kuester has been on hot water much of this season after a disappointing season. But the Pistons can always change their mind and decide to get rid of Kuester.

The Pistons have not made an official decision on Kuester’s fate. The Pistons finished 30-52 with a win in the regular season finale at the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.

"I really haven't thought about it," Kuester said.

Hawkeyes are hoping Heiar recovers from his injuries in a weekend car accident

The Iowa Hawkeyes’ football team is all hoping that offensive lineman Dan Heiar makes a speedy recovery.

Heiar was involved in a single-car accident over the weekend. There’s no word on how bad the accident was, except for Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz saying that Heiar’s condition will be updated at the appropriate time.

"Dan Heiar was in an accident this weekend and is currently hospitalized," Ferentz said in a prepared statement. "Our only concerns right now are Dan's well-being and recovery."

Heir participated in spring practice with the Hawkeyes after enrolling in the school in January. He transferred to Iowa from Iowa Western Community College.

San Diego saw two former players and a former assistant coach charged in a sports betting business

The University of San Diego is a step closer to getting over a bad time in its men's basketball history.

Three have been charged with running a sports betting business to affect the outcome of games. All were charged on Monday.

Brandon Johnson, the school's all-time leader in points and assists; Thaddeus Brown, a former assistant coach at the school, and Brandon Dowdy, who last played at the school in 2006-07, were all charged. They were not the only individuals charged in the case, as 7 others were chargers.

The authorities did not say how the scheme worked, but they said they were trying to determine everybody's role in the scheme.

Washington State is the latest team to work with Nike to create new football uniforms

Nike Football has showcased its latest college football uniform.

The Washington State Cougars are the latest team to work with Nike. Ohio State, Oregon, and Florida – to name a few – have all partnered with Nike to create new football jerseys for the teams.

In the red Cougars jersey, it's going to be all red with white numbers. There will be a grey strip on the shoulders. The team will wear a red helmet with white pants.

In the white Cougars jersey, it's going to be all white with red numbers. There will also be a grey strip on the shoulders. White pants will also be used for these jerseys, with a red helmet.

The third jersey will be grey. It will be all grey with red lettering and numbers. The helmets and pants will be grey.

Rudolph runs impressive times at the Fighting Irish Pro Day

Kyle Rudolph showed why he's regarded as the best tight end in this month's NFL draft.

Rudolph ran a forty time of 4.78 and 4.80 seconds at the Fighting Irish's Pro Day on Thursday. The times are the same as those previously posted by current Oakland Raiders tight end Zach Miller when he was coming out of Arizona State.

Miller had near the exact time as Rudolph when he was at the 2007 Pro Combine. Miller was selected with the 38th overall pick in the draft.

The Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons are two potential landing spots for Rudolph.

Indians no longer have the two prospects they received for Wood last year

The Cleveland Indians no longer has a prospect that they received in the Kerry Wood trade.

The Indians has released third baseman Matt Cusick. He was one of two players that the Indians received from the Yankees in last season's trade for Wood.

Cusick has reached the Triple-A level in 2010. He played in 29 games for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, besides spending time at the Double-A level with the Trenton Thunder.

Andrew Shive, the other player the Indians received in the trade, was previously released.

Jacques Lamoureaux wins the 2010-11 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for men's ice hockey

Lowe's has announces its selection for the 2010-11 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for men's ice hockey.

Lowe's selected Air Force Forward Jacques Lamoureaux as the winner. The announcement and trophy presentation was made today by Lowe's at the NCAA Men's Frozen Four in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

The award was chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I head coaches, national media, and fans. The award is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in Division 1 men’s ice hockey.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a Division 1 senior. They most also have notable achievements in four categories of excellence – community, classroom, character, and competition.

"This is truly an honor and humbling to accept this award on behalf of my teammates and the Air Force Academy," Lamoureux said. "We have had a lot of worthy candidates the last few years and for someone to win this award from the Academy is a tremendous honor."

Grimes pitches her first solo no-hitter in her career

No-Hitters are more common in softball than in baseball.

But it's still a great feat every time a no-hitter happens. Northwestern State junior right-handed pitcher Kelee Grimes pitched a no-hitter on Wednesday in the second game of a double header against Alcorn State.

Grimes is the 11th pitcher in school history to record a no-hitter. She struck out 16 strikeouts in the game en route to her second career no-hitter and her first career solo no-hitter. She combined with Brooke Boening and Jessica English to throw Northwestern's previous no-hitter on March 9th, 2010 against Grambling.

Grimes improved to 5-6 on the season. Northwestern State improved to 22-16 with the win.

Henson and Zeller has decided to return to North Carolina

North Carolina received great news this evening.

North Carolina has announced that forwards John Henson and Tyler Zeller will be returning to college. Both players will be playing for the Tar Heels in 2011-12.

Henson is a sophomore from Florida, while Zeller is a junior from Indiana. Both players were named second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selections in 2011. Zeller's brother Luke is currently playing in the NBDL with the Bakersfield Jam after playing college basketball at Notre Dame.

"I want to come back to school next year because I enjoy all aspects of being a college student and I truly love being a Tar Heel," says Henson. "We had a fun and successful season, but we all want to improve on what we accomplished. I know at some point I want to play in the NBA, but right now I want to enjoy my college life. My teammates and coaches are great and I want to help them reach the big dreams we all share."

"I came to Carolina because it had the balance of academics and basketball I wanted and it was the best place for me to prepare for life and a career in the NBA," says Zeller. "That's exactly what we have here. I want to finish my college career, compete for championships and graduate on time. That means a lot to my family and me. Plus, I know I can get stronger and improve my all-around game with another year. We had a great season getting to the Elite Eight, but I would like a chance at going out with another title."

Minor only lasts 4 1/3 innings, but will be sent back to Triple-A this weekend

Must rookies struggle in their first appearance.

That was the case for Atlanta Braves rookie pitcher Mike Minor. Minor had a poor start Wednesday night, as he walked three batters and threw a wild pitch. He allowed a two-run first inning in the Braves loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Minor went just 4 1/3 innings in his season debut. He allowed seven hits and five runs with four walks, while striking out two batters. This is likely is last major league appearance for a while.

Minor will be sent back to Triple-A at the end of the weekend. Minor will be sent back in order to make room for Jair Jurrjens when he comes off the disabled list.
