Schnellenberger set to retire at the end of the season

By Anthony Caruso III

Howard Schnellenberger is retiring from college football.

The Florida Atlantic head football coach announced his retirement. He was asked about his future in recent weeks about the media. However, his retirement is not effective until the end of the 2011 season.

Schnellenberger will stay on with the FAU Athletic Department once the 2011 season ends. He will become an ambassador for the school.

Schnellenberger's contract expires at the end of this season. FAU would like to have a new coach in place by late November or early December.

"This was done now to make it as seamless as we could make it," Schnellenberger said. "Let this season stand on its own ... and do it in what I would call a civil way."
