The Miami Dolphins has lost one of its former players of yesteryear.
The Dolphins announced the passing of Jim Mandich. He was apart of the Dolphins family for more than 40-years.
Mandich was a tight end with the great Super Bowl teams in the 70's for the Dolphins. He was a member of the team from 1970 to 1977. He was a member of the 1972 and the 1973 Super Bowl teams, including the perfect season in 1972.
He had 23 touchdowns in his Dolphins career. He also had a 121 receptions for 1,406 yards, with many of these records still alive today. He is second in scoring, fifth in receptions, and second in touchdown catches.
“There will never be another Jim Mandich,” said Miami Dolphin Chairman/Managing General Partner Stephen Ross. “He was universally beloved by all members of the Dolphins family during his self-described forty year 'love affair' with the organization. His passion for this team and this community will forever live on among the generations of Dolphins fans who watched and listened to him. As a fellow Michigan Man, I cherish the time we spent talking about our shared passions for the Wolverines and Dolphins. Our collective hearts go out to the Mandich family as the entire Dolphins community mourns the passing of this one-of-a-kind legend.”
"I was sad to hear about Jim’s passing," said Hall of Fame Head Coach Don Shula who coached Mandich from 1970-1977. "I know he fought a courageous battle, but that was typical of his fighting spirit. When I think about Jim, I always looked at him as a guy who was bright, well prepared, and competitive. He was someone who I could count on as a player and was instrumental in the success we had during his time with the Dolphins. Mary Anne and I want to pass along our condolences to his wife, Bonnie, and the rest of his family."
