There will not be a Triple Crown winner this year.
Shackleford ended the horsing communities hopes of seeing a Triple Crown. There has not been a Triple Crown since 1977 after Shackleford won the Preakness.
Late in the race, Shackleford had to hold off Animal Kingdom, the race favorite. Animal Kingdom was the race favorite after winning the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago.
Shackleford finished fourth in the Derby.
